I’ve made an eco-Christmas tree

Press Packer Katie and her eco-Christmas tree

Press Packer Katie is in an eco-club at school and recently made a Christmas tree from recycled material. Here’s her story.

“Lots of people are worried about the environment, but they don’t do anything about it. My school has decided to do something about it by starting an eco-club.

I am on the eco-committee at my primary school.

We aim to save huge amounts of electricity, water and rubbish each day.

We meet once a week on a Tuesday, during our lunch break. Although we miss our playtime, it’s worth it.

By taking turns to go on duty, we turn off lights and computers in the classrooms if they are not in use.

Recycled tree

So far, we have achieved a bronze eco badge by doing things like closing doors to keep the heat in, only using one paper towel, turning off lights and recycling paper.

And now we don’t have an ordinary Christmas tree.

We have made a tree out of all things that can be recycled, such as milk bottles and boxes. It looks brilliant. We also used plastic bags for tinsel.

In September, we collected 150 old mobile phones for recycling. The money raised by them goes towards making our school even more environmentally friendly.

We are now trying to get a silver eco badge.

So why not make your school an eco-school?”
